Artist Interview- Justin Aerni

Goyde by Justin Aerni

Goyde by Justin Aerni

First off here is a little info about Justin from his website-

My Name is Justin Daniel Aerni. I am 26 years old. I was born in Fort Huachuca Arizona in April 11 1984. I grew up in Spokane Washington. I currently reside in Portland Oregon. I started selling my work to collectors and galleries back in 2006. I’m an artist who is also talented in film production , Sculpture , Designing Clothing and producing my own experimental music. Most of my work depicts my own inner thoughts and emotions. It is a raw expression thought. Most of my work so far has been symbolic in dealing with what I and other humans consider the biggest mysteries such as life and death. My work reflects the fragile human condition we are all held in. In the last couple years my work has been very surreal. Described by most of my fans as “Cartoon surrealism.” My work seems to be completely disconnected visually from real life or “realism” yet very emotionally translatable to the viewer. A lot of my work is done without any pre-production sketch work of any kind. The art that is created is strictly just based off of a feeling or emotion that I am getting at the time of creation. The thought or emotion seems to force its way out in paint form. My paintings are usually completed very fast within two to three hours and are very raw and vibrant. Most of my past paintings have dealt with the darker side of the emotional scope dealing with loneliness, relationships, sadness and love and the feelings related around love but definitely does not define the emotional scope of my art. Most of that work could be described as “lowbrow / macabre.”

Bread Line by Justin Aerni

Okay Justin, lets get this interview thing going. I noticed that you dabble in all sorts of mediums with your work. Is there any particular medium or technique that you favor more that others?

Yeah Bic Pen. I’m sure everyone has had to use one at some point in their lives. I grew up using Bic Pens. I used to keep them in my pockets as a kid. My mom would get so pissed because the ink would turn my pockets black and blue. Today I use them because I can shade and feather very delicately with them plus they are fun to chew on. Now a medium I never use is Oil paints. I’m sure a lot of artists are with me on this one. I just don’t have the patience to sit around and wait for something to dry.. Even with a heat gun they take a solid week to fully dry.. It’s just not worth it to me.

Now to ask the typical question in all artist interviews..sorry, gotta do it. What got you started in making your art work? Any particular inspirations?

My grandpa tot me to paint and be creative as a small child. I knew I was going to be an artist for as long as I can remember. Andy Warhol has always been an inspiration to me. Even as a three year old I still remember the day Continue reading ‘Artist Interview- Justin Aerni’

Abdi Farah wins Works of Art on Bravo!!!

Hell YES!! I was so happy last night when I saw Mr Abdi Farah take the win in Bravo TV’s Works of Art program. I think its funny how lots of critics considered him the underdog of the show. His work was simply awesome and he really deserves the win. I know art is very subjective and everyone will have a different opinion of who should have won but, since I come from more of an illustrative, street art, cartoonish, background…I’m damn happy to see him win! Really all three of the last contestants did a good job (even douche Miles did a good job). Abdi just had a little more of an edge than the others. I even sent him an email (which Im sure his inbox must look crazy) congratulating him and thanking him for being an inspiration to a lot of artists. CONGRATULATIONS Abdi!!!! Your work is pure genius! Check out Abdis website too!!! Lots of great stuff!!-BG

Artist Spotlight- Dalton Ghetti

I gotta give credit to my wife Kelley for helping us out at the ol’blog here- Shes been finding some cool articles around the net about artists that really go way beyond canvas and paints- Check it out-bg

Many artists use pencils to create their works of art, but in the case of  Dalton Ghetti, his pencils actually become artworks. 49-year-old Dalton Ghetti loved to carve things as long as he can remember. As a child, he used to carve his friends’ names into the sides of pencils and offer them as presents. Later, he took sculpting more seriously and began making large wooden sculptures, until he decided to challenge himself and make really tiny artworks. He experimented with many mediums, such as chalk, until the day he discovered pencil graphite.

Using a razor blade, a sculpting knife and a sewing knife, Dalton creates the most amazing sculptures from the tip of regular graphite pencils. And believe it or not, he creates these detailed masterpieces without the use of a magnifying glass.

Dalton Ghetti has been creating pencil tip miniatures for the last 25 years. Usually, most of his creations take several months to complete, but his most intricate piece, a pencil with interlinking chains was took two and a half years. As you can imagine, some of the fragile pencil tips do break, sometimes after months of work, and in the beginning this was a real problem. He would get very angry, but in time, he decided to approach every one of his work with the following philosophy: “well this will break eventually but let’s see how far I get.” He still breaks them, but not as often.

Some people might think it strange, but the artist keeps every one of his broken pencil tip sculptures. He placed over 100 of them on pencil tips and placed them on styrofoam for display. Although they are dead now, he once gave life into them.

Dalton current project has been ongoing for a long time, but upon completion it will be his greatest yet. Back in 2002 he began carving a pencil tip heart a day, he and doesn’t plan on stopping until he has carved 3,000 tears for each of the people who died in the 9/11 terrorist attack of the World Trade Center. He estimates the entire project will take around 10 years.

Dalton Ghetti has been carving pencil tips for the last 25 years, but hasn’t sold any of his artworks, He just gives them to friends, as gifts.

Deviant Art!

I have been on DeviantArt.com for the last four years or so. Out of those four years I use DA at very random times. So, recently I decided to give it another shot, comment on other people’s art work, make some new friends( in places like the UK and Brazil), and overall just really USE the website for what it is designed for…connecting and critiquing with other like-minded artists. Its been a lot of fun now that I really have gotten involved in it. It’s great to get some feedback about my work, get some commission offers, and it’s just a great community of artists. Check it out, set up an account, and add me as a friend! LOL! -B.Gray
